Why is seniority considered a critical issue? What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a seniority system? (A MINIMUM OF 125 WORDS or MORE)  Seniority is a critical issue because unions and management like to use seniority as a reason for or against an employee or employees staying, being laid off, promotions, or other business related issues. Both sides can use a senior employee or employees as an excuse to be laid off because they make the most money or receive the best benefit package from when they started with the company, but on the other hand they can use the seniority employee/employees as a reason to keep them because they have been there longer and have the longevity and dedication to the company compared to the newer employees and are more beneficial to the company. Seniority can be an advantage it opens doors for them first for higher paying positions, but then it’s also not fair on the other hand, because what if the senior employee, where they have been there longer, doesn’t work as hard as the employee that hasn’t been there as long, but puts in 100x’s more effort and dedication than that senior employee, but they are overlooked for the open position because they don’t have the seniority at the company. It’s a double-edged sword. I know a lot of companies use seniority and I don’t necessarily think it’s a bad thing, but to me is a case by case scenario, which I know for a union job can’t be the case as you have procedures that have to be followed and would most likely be breaching the collective bargaining agreement if you did overlook a senior employee for another employee, unless your agreement stated otherwise.
